We travel the road with you, hope for the hopeful and hopeless! We pair authentic listening with the power of hope.
I am Dr. Jenay Garrett, a Licensed Professional Counselor in the Commonwealth of Virginia and a National Certified Counselor. I attended Old Dominion University where I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Human Services and Masters’ degree in Mental Health Counseling. In March of 2022, I earned my Ph.D. in Human & Social Services from Walden University, concentrating in Family Studies & Interventions. My research centers around the reintegration experiences of parents who had African American teenage daughters returning home form juvenile detention centers. I have been working in the human services and mental health fields for 13 years, working in settings ranging from shelters, non-profit organizations, public schools, partial hospitalization, in-patient facilities, and outpatient therapeutic services. I have experience working with children, adolescents, adults, couples, groups, and families with a variety of presenting issues to include self-esteem, various forms of abuse, anxiety, anger, relationship issues, at-risk behaviors, homelessness, foster care, and self-harm. I specialize in working with individuals who have experienced trauma/PTSD, suicidal ideations, and depression.
I am passionate about raising awareness to break down the stigma of mental health. I utilize an integrated approach to counseling which includes EMDR therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Feminist Theory, Trauma-Informed Care, Motivational Interviewing (MI), DBT skills, and Dream Work. These approaches allow me to help clients process through their experiences in a healthy and safe manner. I also have several years of experience direct supervision and consultations to residents in counseling, supervisees in social work, and master level counseling interns. I believe that my purpose in life is to use her professional experience, educational knowledge, and passion to help others journey to a state of peace, healing and growth by providing a non-judgmental space for exploration, support, and empowerment.
